Scraps about politics! Risk and Nothing Else!
It's funny and equally pathetic to know that the only victories we score are in some irrelevant quarrels amongst us, and even in that case we end up losing sometimes. A perfect example would be the brotherly relationship between Jordan and Qatar, or the new Middle Eastern Allies vs Axis situation.
I wonder if politicians have a huge Risk Board game in some room -probably in the Monarch Hotel in Dubai- where they sit around a big table, each one of them carrying his colored pawns "us", and wondering where he should be putting his reinforcements, while another is contemplating exchanging his 3 Cards for a Blitzrig of Soldiers! In Iran's case nobody really knows if its collection of cards can actually yield anything, while Israel will always be drafted a Wild card, and the Palestinians will never manage to add another card to their limbing collection because it's been a long time since they achieved any advances on any front!
I think it's high time for someone to show up and spank all of those players on the back of their heads!.. Maybe they'd realize that life isn't simply a Risk Game!!
Whatever!
Ten things you need to know about your Arab!
Remember, these are basic, and are overwhilmingly standard among Arabs. So, here we go:
1) 90% of Arabs don't eat pork. They do so because 90% of Arabs are Muslims, and it's in their religion that they shouldn't eat pork, not because they hate you or don't want to be like you.
2) Arabs don't hate Americans' or Europeans' way of life! Actually we don't mind it. Some of actually live by it, and those who don't enjoy watching it on TV. We are just a little bit attached to our style of life, and we don't want some redneck like G.W.B to come and force a change on us.
3) Arabs don't hate Jews. If you check our genetic tree you will not find a gene that automatically enduces hate towards them. Actually, until 1920's we were getting a long just fine ans Andalucia, Morrocco, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq and Yemen are a testament to that. It's just a little bit hard to get a long with somebody who is occupying your house and living on your land, while occassionally getting a little bit naughty and killing a bunch of your own people.
4)Those Arabs you call middle easterns, are actually Cauccaisans. In other words WHITE!. Outside the middle east you have other types of arabs in Sudan & North Africa. They are ethnically black or Amazigh, and we love them just as much.
5) Just to emphasize point #3; Arabs are not anti-Semitic. For the very simple an obvious reason: Arabs Are Semitic.
6)Arabs usually, like in 95% of cases, have one wife! So, asking the same old question on how many women a guy is married to is not funny and is actually considered stupid and insulting.
7) When we pray we don't carry spears.
8)If somebody tells you he's Kanaanite, he is an Arab, Akkadian, he is an arab, A Pharoah, he is an Arab, a phoenician, he is an Arab, Lebanese, yes believe it or not he is an arab.
9) Arabs don't want to convert you. We don't care if you are Jewish, Christian, Buddahist, Bahaaist, or whatever. We just want you to let us be, mind your own business and we will mind ours.
10)People you might have seen in Jad Choueiri "Cool/Funky Arabs" are probably arabs, but they are neither representatives nor apologists for the rest of us. They are just a bunch of people with too much time on their hands and you can find people like these anywhere in the entire world. So please don't think that we are as cool or carefree as the Jamaicans!
Dubai & The Financial Crisis
All around the world countries have been hit badly by the financial crisis. People being laid off, companies going bust and houses stand empty like ghost houses from a Hollywood movie. Occasionally, you hear a comment here and there, about Ford, Lehmann Brothers, even Iceland. Not to mention the overwhelming amount of news you get fed daily about the effect of the crisis on the United States, which sometimes gives me the feeling that I’m actually living in an American State! Although it is probably safe to say that this feeling is not totally imaginary. On the other hand, for some reason you can feel that everyone have something to say about Dubai. They are all pundits and experts, and have the sight and the wisdom needed if they were asked to steer the city in the right direction.
I can understand some of those people. It’s competition. Europe, Canada & The US started losing people to this city. Not those fat asses and useless people we used to get in the Gulf in the past, but actually people with skills, who can contribute to the place. Companies started coming here and sitting up headquarters, factories and logistic centers, as they realized that this is where growth is happening, or at least this is the closest point to where it’s happening. However, the part that I don’t understand, is how some of the city’s neighbors sound so wise and all knowing now. Everybody is cursing the boom, and everyone had anticipated at one point of time that this city is going back to the ground. Sand as it was once before. My question to those is, what is your alternative for Dubai? And if this city is going to go down, where else are you going to find a place that pays you that much and offers you this lifestyle!? Saudi? Kuwait? Oman? Jordan? Lebanon? Egypt? Or maybe the right choice is Qatar! A place where Jordanians and Egyptians are currently denied visas. A place where you still need the permission of your sponsor to go back home for a vacation!
Everyone now is critical of what Dubai did. I remember six months ago everyone was in owe, and many where envious! Now, they are like hyenas waiting to quench their thirst! Not with their success god forbids! But with the anticipated failure of others!
For the good of everyone, this city should not go down. Because if it did, we will all go back to working as slaves in KSA, Kuwait & Qatar! Begging our sponsors for a holiday to spend at home. Suffering every time we want to change jobs. Living like prisoners in our homes because we don’t feel the freedom and the security we used to feel in Dubai!
But if you think about it for a while you realize that this city is not going back to the dark ages! It has the infrastructure needed for a business hub, and for a tourists’ destination. It might and actually did slow down, but as everything else, nothing lasts forever. That is why it was called a boom. They will have to adjust. The correction will take its course and things will and should pick up again. At that point of time, if any multinational thinks of establishing headquarter here, or focus on this market they will do it from Dubai. Simply because there is no other option! You may search for it as much as you want, but other than Dubai & Abu Dhabi, and I think they will do themselves a favor if they actually start giving those who lived here for 10 years or more passports or permanent visas “Something similar to a green card” because on the long run people will need more reasons to stay other than work!
I don’t see where else it can happen. Qatar? Well, maybe. But they need to start treating expats as humans more.

The World Food Crisis
Now let’s look at some facts a got from the World Food Program’s (WFP) site:
* Top international experts say millions of people are being pushed deeper into poverty and hunger by high food prices. According to the World Bank, the number is at least 100 million. WFP’s research indicates that it could be as high as 130 million.
* On international commodity markets, food prices have gone up 54 percent over the last year, with cereal prices soaring 92 percent. (Source: FAO – World Food Situation).
* Over the first four months of 2008 WFP paid an average of US$430 for a metric ton of wheat, compared to US$207 for the same period of 2007, an increase of 108 percent.
* WFP is also paying more for other key elements in its food basket: 33 percent more for maize, 50 percent more for rice, 73 percent more for vegetable oil and 61 percent more for pulses.
* World cereal reserves are expected to fall 5 percent this year, to their lowest point for 25 years. (Source: FAO - Crop Prospects).
* Approximately 1 billion people still live on less than US$ 1 dollar a day, the threshold defined by the international community as absolute poverty, below which survival is in question.
In the interviews there were a lot of reasons causing the crisis mentioned, the developing countries’ economics growth, higher energy prices, the growth of bio-fuel production, and the climatic conditions resulting in flooding the crops. But out of this darkness I still can find something to laugh at, in the matter of fact it’s even extremely funny or extremely sad, that thing was, non of the experts interviewed, or at least those I watched, came to mention the civil wars in the hungry countries.
Let’s look at the most affected countries by the crisis and see if the civil wars have anything to do with that or not. These countries are, Somalia, Central Africa, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Other countries like Philippines, Sudan, India, and Sri Lanka, have got their shares of poverty too.
Now let’s try to find the solution, in my opinion, stopping the emerging countries from developing will not solve the problem, although this is the “first world” target, but it’s just stupid. Higher energy prices have something to do with the solution that I’m going to propose. Bio-fuel production takes only 5% of the world cereal production, so stop stressing that point just because Brazil is the world largest producer not the USA.
In the end, I think that the solution is stopping the civil wars, so Europe and America, stop feeding your dogs of war, they will die, and innocent people will live.
Dubai in the eye of the storm
As it turned out, that breeze was merely a strained gesture of hospitality from the city, because as I got into the car, I felt like I was put in a time machine and airborned to kuwaiti desert with sands attacking me from all directions! I gazed at the sky with a frown, and there were armies of black clouds masking the sun! I thought to myself, this doesn't look like dubai at all! And the sentence was vindicated by the absence of Burj Dubai from the horizon! Eclipsed by the sand crunch! This is not good for those beach goers!
However, for some reason my mind almost immediately fetched another crunch from my memories' database. I have to say that this word wasn't so popular with me, and I barely remember using it. The Credit Crunch Effect on Dubai feels almost similar to that of the sand storm! Sudden, unexpected, and without a timetable or a set of actions on the agenda! Just chaotic. More importantly both of them are creepy. Although an expact, you can not help but to be afraid that something wrong is going to happen for this city. A lot of things have been eclipsed, but there is nothing to confirm it. Recently, a company CAME OUT!. Yes, I'm using the same term because it is a similar TABOO! Damac fired 200 employees! And this is the first bite. Some rumors are circulating about Nakheel doing the same.
Dubai is a wonderful city, no matter our complains about traffic and prices and artificiality! Seriously, what did egyptians get from Cairo's authenticity?? The matter of the fact is that this city offers endless opportunities and experiences to its residents. Granted, it's not perfect. But so is every other city.
I expect other developers like Nakheel and Emaar to follow suit and start downsizing. We'll feel the heat for awhile. But I have a feeling this city is going to bounce back again. We will see the benefits of the diversified economy.
Who knows, maybe all of this is gentle reminder for Dubai that she needs to take it easy, and give herself time to grow. Afterall, God created Heaven and Earth in seven days.
The Forgotten Millions - 30 years in the wrong direction

Now, in the twenty first century, the new statistics are:
1 Million divorced women
2 Million Widows
4 Million Iletirate
Why?
Was it because of the 8-year war between iraq and iran?
Was it because of the Gulf war?
Was it beacause of the decade-long economical seige the world enforced on Iraq?
Was it because of the American invasion of Iraq?
Or, Was it because of the ongoing occupation, and the mess associated with it?
No matter the reason, or the excuses. No promise, no goodwill, nothing, can make us escape the bleak outlook of the Civilization of Iraq! A whole generation has been lost, and all we can say is God saves the one coming.
Iraq has always bounced back. History is there for everyone to see! This nation never dies. Shame on those who think it will, and shame on the world for watching while all sorts of dogs, and vultures tried to kill it.
Smiling Face or World War II...?

There are three possible stories to justify this,
1- To "frame" the logo of the watch maker. The hands at that number cause the eyes to look right at the logo!
2- The hands on the dial indicating 10:10 also represent a smiling face, sells better than watches indicating e.g. 08:20.
3- During the Second World War, Japan was the main manufacturer of clocks and watches, and when the US bombed Hiroshima islands, the impact of the explosion was so much that all the clocks and watches stopped at that particular time, and that time was 10 minutes past 10. So, in order to mark the gruesome bombings and remember the same, all over the world the clocks and watches at any shop show this time.
A lot of people supports the third story as the actual reason for that, I myself, support the “frame the logo” story, I don’t know, it just makes more sense to me than the other romantic stories.
Your Facebook is you new CV!!!

Natalie The virgin Bunny Ranch Virginity Auction
(In my opinion, this is a new type of prostitution, I mean people, she is asking for money in exchange for sex.)
Natalie said she’s been forced to sell herself because her stepfather took out a student loan in her name, so she’s unable to finance her education. She said:
“I don’t have a moral dilemma with it. Why shouldn’t I be allowed to capitalize on my virginity? I understand some people may condemn me. But I think this is empowering. I’m using what I have to better myself.”
(Poor little baby)
In order to prove that she’s a virgin, Natalie took a lie-detector test, and believe it or not she is telling the truth. She’s still a virgin. One of the questions that really convinced me that she’s telling the truth was, have you ever tried to lose your virginity? The answer was no, and I really believe her cause she’s really hot if she actually tried, she would've succeeded, I mean look at her…
Natalie already has her bachelor’s in women’s studies from Sacramento State. In January she starts working on getting her master’s in marriage and family therapy.
(Watch out American families, a new marriage counsellor is on her way to help you create big happy families)
In the end, I just have one question, can morals get any lower???
Trading The Financial Markets: The Arabic Version
The second thing I've noticed, is that most of us think it's vague, no one really know what's going on, that's not true either, it's so clear and you can easily figure out how you made your money or how you lost them, but what makes it vague is that 90% of those who "invest" in these markets don't know anything about investing or about the financial markets, yes when a taxi driver takes his children’s food money and go gamble it in the markets and loose it that’s what I’m talking about, and no offence taxi drivers! It was just an example, so the normal result is that they not understand what's going on and think that everyone wants to rope their money.
In most of the (developed) countries there is something called Funds, these funds collect money from those who don’t have time to trade and study the markets or who don’t have the knowledge or the resources to trade in the markets, they pool the money they collected and starts trading or more investing it, and as a reward they take part of the profit, there are many kinds of funds which defer by the investing strategy, I will be post more about these funds later, but for now, for the love of God people open up and start taking responsibility for your mistakes.
My Grandma Used To Say...
this phrase is very famous in Jordan, and I think in many other Arab countries. But what does it mean?
I’ll tell you. It means while your are in preliminary school you have to study hard to make it easier on you to work your way up through high school. But when you are in high school, you have to study hard to make your way through to university, and when you finally make it to university, you have to study hard in order to graduate with at least good grades to make it easier on you to get a job or continue your post graduate studies . Until now ít's totally true, and I agree with it 100 %.
But when you complete your study with at least BA or BSc, you need to find a job, and here comes the first shock. It’s not easy to find a good job even if your grades were high unless you are connected (talking about the Arab countries), and even if you were lucky and got that job, you will not be able to get better positions according to your knowledge even if you were super genius. But, say that you are not connected and you got lucky and got a job in a good company, how can you proceed to higher positions? Again, hard work. But even hard work will not get you to the top.
So, what's the right answer here?
I think the answer is that you have to be practical smart, and there is a big difference between practical smart and academic smart. I’ve seen a lot of academic smart people who are still struggling with low level jobs just because they are not smart (practically) enough to make their way to the next level.
So, back to our subject, you need hard work and smartness. But say you made it to the top management, is that the time they were talking about? When your life becomes easier and you get to rest? No! I don’t think so, because in order to keep your position, you need to work even harder and not be smart but genius, and work even in your sleep.
Ok, the next level, you are the owner of you own business, is that it? Is that what they were talking about? No, it’s not, because you will have to work like you’ve never worked before to keep the business going. It’s not going to be easy on you to work for someone else after you become your own boss, so you have to make it work. You have to win the battle.
Conclusion!!
You will never be able to rest and your life will never become easier, unless, you are lucky enough to be someone like Bill Gates, and retire in your early 50’s with a net worth of over than USD 45 billions.
So come to think of it, is it worth it to lose your best days in your youth trying to reach that point? I don’t think so.
And so
Live your life to the fullist, and don’t waste it perusing this illusion.
GCC Business: Trends & Realities
On the other hand Bahrain was busy creating an Offshore and Islamic Banking center; they started working on it on the 1970’s, and despite all the competition from Dubai, Qatar, and Lebanon; Bahrain is still the leader of these 2 business divisions.
But that was the past, what about the future? How can these countries keep the business going? Well, they don’t have to keep it at the same pace, but more mature growth rate. Since they only invested in one thing until now, which is infra structure, the answer to that question is business diversification, less investment in infra structure, more investment in tourism, or light less-polluting industries (Tec Industries), or even creating an education center, a city which all scholars and researchers want to go to, study, live, and work.
I’m not writing this to tell them how to run their business – I’m in no place to give such an advice – they created the business and I’m sure that they know how to run it,
I’m writing because I was navigating through my old saved articles from different sites and I came across this sentence from an article that was published on the Arabian Business site, here is what they said “Business confidence is falling across the GCC with Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates the most pessimistic in the six-nation group” and on another site here is what I found “The Wall Street Journal reports that international "financial analysts are starting to wonder about the amount of debt the city-state is racking up." The article paints a picture of a city with dwindling oil revenues but a limitless appetite for growth. It places Dubai's debt, relative to gross domestic product, at about 42%. That's pretty high compared to Abu Dhabi's debt of 2.9% of GDP”
In my opinion, the growth will continue, maybe in a slower rate but it definitely will, I can only hope that they work as partners and brothers, not as competitors.
What do you think?
Sarah Palin vs Britney Spears
Democracy for the dumb!
.....
Arabs! Funny People! Even when we brag about democracy, we go and screw it up!
